Product Information

Threaded rod, also sold as all thread or all-thread rod, is a straight bar threaded along its entire length. It is cut to size on site and secured with nuts and washers at each end, which makes it the standard component wherever a fixing length is not known until installation.

The largest single use is suspended building services: pipe hangers, HVAC ductwork, cable tray, sprinkler lines and unistrut channel are almost all hung on threaded rod. It is also used to anchor into concrete with resin, to build machine frames and jigs, and to make studs and U-bolt substitutes to a drawing.

Johnny's Hardware supplies threaded rod in metric M6 to M24 and imperial 1/4 inch to 1 inch, in 1 m, 2 m and 3 m lengths as standard, in property classes 4.8, 8.8 and 10.9 and in stainless A2 and A4. Coupling nuts, hex nuts and washers are quoted alongside so the assembly ships complete.

What is threaded rod used for?
Mostly for suspending building services. Pipe hangers, HVAC ductwork, cable tray and sprinkler drops are hung on threaded rod because the drop length is rarely known until installation. It is also used for resin anchoring into concrete, machine frames, and cut-to-length studs made to a drawing.
What is the difference between threaded rod and all thread?
None. All thread, all-thread rod, threaded bar and studding are regional names for the same product: a bar threaded along its full length. Order under whichever term your market uses, and confirm the size, grade, length and finish rather than relying on the name alone.
What grade of threaded rod should be specified?
Class 4.8 is adequate for light, non-load-bearing work. Class 8.8 is the usual choice where the rod carries weight, and 10.9 where the load is high. For sprinkler and other safety-critical suspension, the grade is often set by local code, so confirm it before quoting rather than defaulting to the cheapest.
Can threaded rod be joined to make a longer length?
Yes, with coupling nuts. A coupling nut is a long hex nut that takes both rod ends and holds full thread engagement across the joint. Confirm the engagement depth on each side, because a joint made with a standard nut instead of a coupling nut is materially weaker.
What lengths are supplied as standard?
Metric rod is normally 1 m, 2 m and 3 m. Imperial markets usually take 3 ft, 6 ft, 10 ft or 12 ft. Rod can also be cut to a fixed length and bundled per site, which reduces waste and site cutting time on repeat installations.
Do hot-dip galvanized nuts fit hot-dip galvanized rod?
Yes, but the nut thread is tapped oversize to clear the zinc, which is thick on hot-dip work. That is normal and specified in the standard. Do not substitute hot-dip nuts onto zinc plated rod, because the fit becomes loose and the joint loses preload.
Is stainless threaded rod available?
Yes, in A2 (304) for general exposed use and A4 (316) for coastal, marine and chemical environments. Note that stainless nuts on stainless rod can gall and seize during assembly, especially above M10, so an anti-seize compound is worth specifying with the order.
