Product Information

Lost-Head Nails, also called Countersunk Nails in some UK, Australian and European DIY markets, are small-head woodworking nails designed to be driven slightly below the timber surface. The recess can then be filled, sanded and painted for a neat, low-visibility finish.

Their function is broadly comparable to American finish nails: they are used for interior trim, skirting boards, architraves, moldings, panels, cabinetry and other non-structural wood finishing work where an exposed nail head is not wanted. Product dimensions and head profiles should be selected to match the timber thickness and required finish.

A Claw Hammer is used to drive the nail close to the surface, followed by a Nail Punch to set the head below the wood without damaging the surrounding face. Lost-head nails are intended for finish carpentry, not structural framing, load-bearing joints, concrete fastening or metal structures.

FAQs

Sourcing questions, samples, MOQ, packing & shipping.

What are lost-head nails used for?
They are used for skirting boards, architraves, moldings, panels, cabinetry and other finish-carpentry work where the fixing should be recessed, filled and painted.
Are lost-head nails the same as finish nails?
They serve a similar concealed-fixing purpose. Lost-head nails are common UK and Australian terminology for manually installed small-head woodworking nails, while American finish nails often also refer to collated nails used with a finish nailer.
How are lost-head nails hidden in wood?
Drive the nail close to the surface with a Claw Hammer, use a Nail Punch to set the head slightly below the timber face, then fill, sand and paint the recess.
Can lost-head nails be used for structural framing?
No. They are finish-carpentry fasteners and should not be used for structural framing, load-bearing joints, concrete fastening or metal structures.
What tools are recommended?
A Claw Hammer and Nail Punch are the standard manual tools. The punch helps recess the small head without marking the surrounding finished wood.
What information is needed for a quotation?
Please provide nail diameter, length, finish, packing style, order quantity, destination market and any reference photo or sample requirement.
