Product Information

Lag Screws / Lag Bolts are large wood-thread fasteners with a hexagonal head, a substantial shank and a pointed tip. They engage timber directly rather than a matching nut. Typical specified uses include beam-to-post joints, steel brackets fixed to timber and timber swing-frame connections. Suitability depends on the connection design, timber species and condition, screw dimensions, thread penetration and required loads; this catalogue does not assign a universal load rating.

Prepare a pilot hole for the threaded portion in the receiving timber and the specified clearance hole through the attached member for the unthreaded shank. Hole dimensions and depths must follow the selected screw and connection specification, including timber density, edge and end distances and fastener spacing. A clearance hole is not a full-diameter hole through the timber intended to hold the threads. Fit the specified washer or bearing plate under the head where required by the connection design.

Install by turning the hex head with a correctly sized Socket Wrench or ratchet; use a drill and suitable bits to prepare the holes. Keep the screw aligned and tighten to the specified seating condition without crushing the wood or stripping the threads. Match coating or stainless grade to outdoor exposure and preservative-treated timber where applicable. Bracket bases fixed into concrete need a separately specified anchoring system. Lag screws are also called lag bolts or coach screws, but carriage bolts have a different head and fastening arrangement and are not interchangeable.

Features & Benefits

  • HEXAGONAL HEAD - Accepts a correctly sized socket for controlled rotational installation.
  • COARSE WOOD THREAD - Engages the receiving timber directly without a matching nut.
  • SUBSTANTIAL SHANK - For heavier timber connections when selected by the connection specification.
  • PRE-DRILLED INSTALLATION - Separate pilot and clearance-hole requirements support correct engagement and seating.
  • BEARING AND EXPOSURE MATCHING - Confirm washers, material and coating for the joint and environment.
  • WHOLESALE SPECIFICATION MATCHING - Submit dimensions, drawing or sample and packing requirements for quotation.

FAQs

Sourcing questions, samples, MOQ, packing & shipping.

Are lag screws and lag bolts the same product?
These names commonly refer to the same hex-head wood-thread fastener; coach screw is another common name. It screws directly into timber. Confirm the drawing and dimensions when ordering.
Are lag bolts the same as carriage bolts?
No. A carriage bolt typically has a rounded head, a square neck and machine threads used with a nut. A lag screw has a hex head and pointed wood thread. Select the fastener required by the connection design.
What is the difference between a pilot hole and a clearance hole?
The pilot hole prepares the receiving timber for thread engagement. The clearance hole lets the unthreaded shank pass through the attached member. Use the specified sizes and depths; do not drill a shank-size hole through the intended threaded anchorage.
Can lag screws be used for beams, brackets or swing frames?
They may be specified for these timber connections, but capacity depends on screw dimensions, material, timber and connection geometry. Use the project or equipment design and its specified fasteners. Do not infer a safe working load from the product name alone.
Which tools and washers are needed?
Prepare the holes with a drill and suitable bits, then turn the head with a matching socket wrench or ratchet. Use the washer or bearing plate required by the joint design and avoid over-tightening into the wood.
What information is needed for a wholesale quote?
Send diameter, length, thread and shank lengths, head dimensions, material, finish, drawing or sample, intended timber and exposure, quantity and packing. Identify any required standards or test documents. Availability, MOQ and lead time are confirmed for the specification.
