Product Information

Clout Nails, also called Felt Nails, are large flat-head nails used for fastening roofing felt and compatible soft sheet materials to timber. Common in UK and Australian hardware ranges, the broad round head distributes pressure over a wider area to help reduce pull-through in thin or flexible materials.

Typical applications include roofing felt, canvas attached to timber and soft insulation board where the material supplier permits nail fixing. Selected plasterboard corner-bead installations may also use suitable large-head nails into timber backing, subject to the bead and lining specifications. Some insulation or underlay systems require caps, washers or dedicated fixings instead of a bare nail head.

Loose clout nails are driven with a Claw Hammer, or a Tack Hammer for smaller nails and light work. Seat the head evenly without cutting through felt or crushing soft board. Select shank length, head diameter, material and corrosion protection for the sheet thickness, timber penetration and exposure. A large flat head alone does not provide a watertight seal; follow the roof system instructions for fastener placement and weatherproofing.

Features & Benefits

  • LARGE FLAT HEAD - Spreads contact pressure over thin felt and compatible flexible sheet materials.
  • FELT-TO-TIMBER FIXING - Suitable for specified roofing felt attachment to sound timber substrates.
  • LIGHT SHEET APPLICATIONS - Canvas and soft board uses depend on the material supplier approving this fixing.
  • HAND-DRIVEN FORMAT - Loose nails for Claw Hammer installation; Tack Hammer for suitable small sizes.
  • FINISH SELECTION - Confirm galvanised steel or alternative material requirements for the exposure and substrate.
  • WHOLESALE PACKING - Bulk cartons, retail boxes and private-label packing can be reviewed for the order.

FAQs

Sourcing questions, samples, MOQ, packing & shipping.

What are clout nails used for?
They are commonly used to secure roofing felt to timber. Canvas and soft sheet materials can also be fixed where their manufacturers permit this nail type.
Why do felt nails have large flat heads?
The broad head spreads pressure and helps reduce pull-through. It must be seated without tearing or excessively compressing the material.
Are clout nails the same as roofing nails?
The terms overlap for some large-head nails. This range focuses on loose, hand-driven felt and sheet fixings; coil roofing nails require a matching roofing nailer and specification.
Can these nails fix insulation boards or plasterboard corner beads?
Only where the board or bead manufacturer permits the selected nail and substrate. Some systems need caps, washers, screws or dedicated insulation fixings.
Which hammer should be used?
Use a Claw Hammer for normal loose clout nails. A Tack Hammer can suit smaller nails and light work. Choose a tool appropriate to the nail size and timber.
What information is needed for a quotation?
Send length, shank and head diameters, material, finish, application, quantity and packing requirements. MOQ, sample availability, lead time and private-label options are confirmed for the requested specification.
